State of AEO Adoption 2025
An analysis of AEO readiness across websites audited through AuditIQ, covering the most common gaps, score distributions, and the revenue opportunity from fixing them.
Key findings
The AEO gap is widespread
Across sites audited through AuditIQ, the average AEO score is 43 out of 100. The distribution is heavily skewed: a small number of large enterprises score in the 70s and 80s, while the majority of small and mid-size business sites score below 50.
This isn't primarily a content quality problem. Most sites have useful, accurate content. The gap is structural, the content isn't marked up in ways that allow AI engines to confidently extract and cite it. The fixes are largely technical, not editorial.
Most common AEO gaps
- Missing llms.txt, the single most common gap, present in 94% of audited sites. Takes 30 minutes to create and immediately signals AEO intent to AI crawlers.
- No FAQ schema, 78% of sites have FAQ-style content with no FAQPage markup. AI extractors rely heavily on this schema for answer generation.
- Absent Organization schema, 61% lack the structured data that establishes brand entity for AI knowledge graphs.
- Non-snippet-formatted answers, content is written as long-form prose rather than concise 40-60 word definition paragraphs that AI extractors prefer.
- Missing SoftwareApplication or Product schema, especially common for SaaS products, which often have no structured data indicating what the product does or costs.
The revenue opportunity
When site owners provide their traffic and revenue metrics, AuditIQ calculates the annual revenue opportunity from fixing identified issues. The median opportunity across audited sites is $82,000 per year, based on the traffic lift expected from resolving high and medium priority findings.
The wide range reflects the diversity of sites audited. A high-traffic e-commerce site with significant technical debt can have a multi-million dollar opportunity. A smaller B2B SaaS site might see $40-80k. In both cases, the ratio of opportunity to fix cost is highly favorable: most high-priority fixes take under 4 hours to implement.
Highest-ROI fixes by category
- llms.txt creation, 30 minutes, immediate AEO signal improvement across all AI engines
- FAQ schema implementation, 1-2 hours, enables rich result eligibility and AI citation
- Organization schema, 30 minutes, establishes brand entity recognition
- XML sitemap submission to Search Console, 1 hour, accelerates indexation of all pages
- Core Web Vitals fixes (LCP optimization), 1-3 days, direct ranking factor improvement
